(Denver, CO) – The National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) has recognized Environmental StoneWorks with their 2017 NAHB/Builders Mutual Insurance Company Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE) in the category of Specialty Trade Contractor Safety Program of the Year (for companies with greater than 50 employees). Environmental StoneWorks earned the award for their commitment to a culture of zero accidents.
“This recognition, well-earned and well-deserved by each of our 800 associates, illustrates that NAHB has recognized and acknowledged our industry commitment to consistently working to improve construction safety,” noted Chuck Stein, president and CEO of Environmental StoneWorks. “The Environmental StoneWorks management team, as a whole, includes in our fundamental values the necessity of contributing to the safety and well-being of all employees and surrounding trades.”
The idea of a culture of zero accidents is built around the three pillars of communicating, evaluating, and acting. Information is communicated in print and in person, performances are evaluated, and action is taken on these evaluations. Actions include training, retraining, recognizing safe performances, adjusting performances where needed, and jobsite safety inspections. The EH&S team at Environmental StoneWorks is well-traveled, consistent, and OSHA authorized. As a result, the recordable incident rate at Environmental StoneWorks has dropped from 7.86 in 2014 to 0.98 in 2017.
“Our employees follow safety procedures and suggest improvements not because they are rewarded for doing so, but because they want to,” said Jon Maloney, the director of EH&S and risk management for Environmental StoneWorks. “While our recordable incident rate has dropped significantly, what is more impressive is to see the difference our safety culture has made in both the work and home lives of our employees. This award is the culmination of a team effort to focus on safety, from management, to sales and project managers, to each individual employee.”
According to a letter from NAHB, the goal of the SAFE program is to recognize the achievements of homebuilders and trade contractors who have developed and implemented high-quality construction safety programs. Environmental StoneWorks was recognized specifically for “award-winning efforts to ensure that home builders, trade contractors, and workers in the residential construction industry return home to their families and friends each day.”
